Brian Besser currently serves as the DEA District Agent in Charge of the State of Utah. Agent Besser is responsible for overseeing all of DEA’s administrative and enforcement efforts throughout the state’s twenty-nine counties; he also serves as the Commander of the Metro Narcotics Task Force – a multi-agency partnership comprised of over fifteen local, state, and federal law enforcement organizations. During his 27 year career, Agent Besser has served in both federal and local law enforcement positions with assignments in Greenville, South Carolina; Syracuse, New York; Rockford, Illinois; Washington D.C., and Salt Lake City, Utah. As a field agent Mr. Besser functioned as a subject matter expert for clandestine laboratory operations and threat assessment. While assigned to DEA Headquarters, Agent Besser managed DEA’s global program responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining functional emergency preparedness and Continuity of Operations. Agent Besser holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Bob Jones University and is completing his Master of Divinity with Maranatha Seminary. He is the father of triplet daughters who he refuses to let grow-up.

Jamie Clinton-Lont

Jamie Clinton is the Director of the Salt Lake VA Health Care System's Primary Care Pain Education and Opioid Monitoring Program. Ms. Clinton invented, developed, and piloted this unique Program which was nominated for Best Practice in the management of chronic non-cancer pain and opioid prescribing. Ms. Clinton has served our Veteran's for 27 years as a primary care provider and more recently as the Women's Service Medical Director. She has expertise in program and curriculum development, primary care, opioid prescribing, musculoskeletal pain, women's health, and Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Ms. Clinton is here to talk about the current opioid crisis and her Program.

Cassie Thatcher

Cassie Thatcher is from Elmo Utah. She is the wife of Daniel Thatcher and mother 4 children. She has been an active member of 4-H and many other great organizations. She is currently the Project Coordinator for the Well Connected Community in Emery County. She has served on many different boards throughout Emery County. The topic of Opioid Abuse is something very personal to Cassie. She lost her older brother to an accidental drug overdose in June of 2016.

Sandra Sulzer

Dr. Sandra Sulzer is the Director of the Health Extension: Advocacy, Research and Teaching (HEART) initiative of Utah State University and an Assistant Professor of Health and Wellness in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, and Cooperative Extension, at USU. She is trained as a medical sociologist and has conducted more than a decade of research in behavioral health, with an emphasis on community-led initiatives. She teaches in the Masters of Public Health program and currently serves on the Opioid Working Group and the Behavioral Health Impact Collaborative of the National Extension Committee on Organization and Policy.

Tiffany Van Sickle

Tiffany Van Sickle is the Substance Use Prevention Coordinator for the Four Corners Region in Utah. She has worked in public health and disease prevention since 2007. Using the Strategic Prevention Framework and the Communities that Care models the Utah Prevention system works to create a community-based prevention effort. Tiffany works with the three counties in her area to provide the technical assistance needed to create and sustain these community based efforts.

Kathy Donathan

Kathy Donathan has worked for Southeast Utah Health Dept. for the last 4 years. She started working primarily with Tobacco Cessation with Youth and Adults. Now she works with the Substance Abuse Population, Suicide Prevention and is secretary/treasurer of the Hope Squad for Carbon and Emery County. Currently working on the Opioid Prescription Grant for the Southeast Utah Health Department.

Marshall Thompson

Marshall Thompson is the director of the Utah Sentencing Commission, which publishes criminal sentencing guidelines and advising all three branches of the Utah government on criminal sentencing policy. He has a J.D. from Brigham Young University, an M.S. in Mass Communications from Ohio University, and a B.A. in Journalism from Utah State University.

Angela Stander

Angela Stander-Ito is the Opioid Prevention Coordinator for the Utah Department of Health in the Violence and Injury Prevention Program. She oversees multiple grants and works on provider education, public awareness, policy, and is the current chairwoman of the Utah Coalition for Opioid Overdose Prevention. Angela has a B.S. in Health Promotion and Spanish from Weber State University and is currently working on a Masters of Social Work from the University of Utah. Prior to working in prevention for the Department of Health she worked for 5 + years in substance abuse treatment in residential treatment centers and prevention at the local health department level.
