Approach for depth-dependent thermal conductivity measurement of ion-irradiation samples

Ion-irradiated materials tend to have the microstructural damage, often measured by dpa (displacement per atom), strongly dependent on depth. In this study, we provide a strategic guideline to divide the damage zone of an ion-irradiated sample into a few layers with uniform properties. By doing so, the continuously changing thermal conductivity is simplified and described by a piece-wise function, and the DPA-thermal conductivity relationship can be obtained from one or a few samples with a good accuracy. The approach is validated on Zircaloy samples. This method, combining with the micrometer-resolution photothermal reflectance technique, provides a powerful tool in studying the thermal property degradation and corresponding microstructural change of post-irradiation materials and ones with a similar structure.
