Advocating for Policy at the State Level
Action will give a brief overview of the history of the Extreme Risk Protective Order bill and why it matters in domestic violence. In addition we will teach an advocacy 101 training course which includes:
Best practices for engaging as an advocate who is providing education to law makers.
What you can and cannot do as a 501C3 organization and as a private citizen lobbyist.
What messaging and talking points to use when advocating on this particular topic.
When and how to meet with law makers for best results.
We will also talk about stories from the field illustrating what worked and didn't work to sway lawmakers and others, as well as create opportunities for practice lobbying and advocating.

Carrie Butler is a graduate of the Public Health and Public Policy programs at the University of Utah. She has a background in data analysis and research, including time spent working on a cancer study at Huntsman and coordinating the CDC funded biomonitoring program with the Utah Public Health Lab.
Carrie has spent the last several years working as a lobbyist for Action Utah working with lawmakers on policies such as climate change mitigation, health care expansion and other important issues.
She is passionate about environmental health and public health policy and believes that Utah is a perfect place to employ policies that will expand health coverage and reduce cost. She lives in South Jordan with her husband and daughters.
