Home, School, and Community Partnership: A Pilot Program
Many EI programs include a partnership between the home and school through weekly home visits and parent/toddler playgroups. Research shows children who have families that are involved with their education, especially during the early years, are more likely to earn higher grades, score high on tests, regularly attend school, and enroll in higher education, among many other positive attributes. However, what about the family's connection to their local community? Many D/HH children do not live in the immediate neighborhood of their EI agency/school for the deaf. While families may connect with the school community, they may feel disconnected from their own neighborhood. We recognize that 'intimate attachment to parents and peers as well as a feeling of belonging to a social network are important in healthy identity development' (Spencer, Erting, & Marschark, 2000). Therefore, The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf's Early Intervention program, 'First Conversations', piloted a partnership program with several local community organizations in Philadelphia. The pilot program's primary goal is to build bridges, not just between the home and school, but to the community as well. By fostering partnerships with the community, Early Intervention providers are able to support the child's educational potential that expands beyond the home and school. This presentation will discuss the evolution of First Conversation's home, school, and community partnership pilot program including: our vision, the development of a family needs assessment, the implementation of the program, and expected and actual outcomes.

- Participants will be able to assess their EI program and evaluate how to foster a collaboration with their community.

Sarrea De Suza earned a B.S. in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology from New York University and a M.A. in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University. She began her career in Loudoun County, VA as a teacher of the Deaf in a center-based D/HH mainstream program and then as an itinerant. Sarrea is currently working at Pennsylvania School for the Deaf’s EI program, First Conversations. She works with families and their young children, ages birth-3, as a home based Early Intervention Teacher.

Lynette Mattiacci

Lynette Mattiacci is currently employed as an Early Intervention teacher at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. She provides both home-based and center-based services to Deaf and HoH children and their families. Lynette teaches full day playgroup three times a week, including a two hour weekly Family Play Day at PSD. She has worked in the Deaf Education field for approximately ten years and has worked with children ranging from 2 years old to pre-kindergarten.
