Growing the Relationship Between the State EHDI Program and Pediatric Audiologists in the Community: A Case Study
Pediatric audiologists are often the first professionals who families interact with during their journey with their deaf/hard of hearing child. As such, these audiologists are integral players in the EHDI process for each state. Moving beyond the 1-3-6 benchmarks and basic reporting and referral requirements, it is important to include pediatric audiologists as stakeholders in the community, and promote their active participation in the process of screening, diagnosis, and early intervention, beyond their time with the child and family in the clinic. In this presentation, multiple avenues for engagement and collaboration with local pediatric audiologists will be discussed. These include involving audiologists in the development and dissemination of resources for families, soliciting feedback from audiologists about various projects, offering relevant continuing education opportunities, and maintaining a database for families and professionals to understand the pediatric audiology services available in their communities. This presentation will touch on some of the tangible impacts of this approach, and how this approach has been beneficial to children and families in our state, and to our state’s EHDI program.
- Participants will be able to list two ways to increase engagement with the pediatric audiology community.
- Participants will be able to explain how collaborative resource development results in increased use of resources.
- Participants will be able to describe how an audiology database can be created to increase access to services for families with children who are deaf/hard of hearing.

Katherine Duncan obtained her doctorate of audiology (Au.D.) from The Ohio State University. She is currently in her ninth year as an educational audiologist at the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Falmouth, Maine. She supports outreach programs for both the birth to five and K-12 populations. She is also the coordinator of the hearing assistive technology program for Child Development Services, Maine's early intervention system. Katherine is the Audiology Consultant for the Maine Newborn Hearing Program, and she serves on the Maine Newborn Hearing Program Advisory Board.
