From a Small Demo to Large Pilot
In 2013 Sweden launched the largest pre-commercial procurement in Europe. The topic was electric road system (ERS). Three years later the world’s first electric road on a public road was opened. A 2 km demonstration based on overhead lines. In the autumn 2017 a second electric road system was installed on a public road close to Stockholm international airport of Arlanda. This ERS was a based on a 2 km electric rail in the road.
Now, we are ready to take the next step by moving from purely technical test to a demonstration of the whole system. As the ERS mature and expand, additional systems and functions will be added such as funding models, ownership, business models, access control, payment system, service providers and end users. With this expansion new challenges arise – land use for power stations, power supply, operating voltage, degree of electrification and intrusion into the landscape.

Dr Magnus Lindgren is the project manager of the pre-commercial procurement of electric road system and vice program manager for the electric road program at the Swedish Transport Administration. The Electric road program include the ERS demonstration activities, the research and innovation platform of electric road, the national ERS roadmap and the German & Swedish partnership for innovation regarding mobility.
