Caring for Self While Serving Survivors: Trauma Stewardship for Domestic Violence Service Providers
Secondary trauma is an inherent reality for professionals exposed to the painful experiences of domestic violence survivors. Self-awareness and self-care are critical for avoiding compassion fatigue. This interactive workshop addresses: (a) recognizing and responding to trauma-reactive behavior in survivors of domestic violence; (b) sources of vicarious trauma for domestic violence service providers; (c) early warning signs of secondary traumatic stress; and (d) compassion fatigue prevention and safety planning for effective self-care. Participatory learning and application will be emphasized.
- By participation in this session, attendees will be able to build understanding and recognition of trauma-reactive behavior in survivors of domestic violence.
- Participants will increase awareness of vicarious trauma and professionals’ ability to self-assess early warning signs of secondary traumatic stress.
- Domestic Violence Service Providers will learn to effectively engage in intentional safety planning and self-care aimed at preventing compassion fatigue and burnout.

Sean Camp, LCSW is a Clinical Associate Professor of Social Work at Utah State University with over 15 years of teaching experience and 27 years of clinical practice and administrative experience. He has been active in the field of foster care and adoption for over 25 years, and served as the State Director for a multisite child-placing agency. Sean has specialties in the areas of working with LGBT youth and adults, children who have been abused, and child sexual behavior management. Sean also serves as the Clinical Director for a local treatment foster care agency.

Susan Cutler Egbert, PhD, LCSW is clinical associate professor and Statewide MSW Program Coordinator at Utah State University. As a scholar of the human experience, Susan is passionate about improving the welfare of children, strengthening families, and promoting multi-level and multi-systemic change through social work education, practice, and leadership. Her areas of focus include adoption, foster care, and trauma-informed intervention. Susan's most impactful source of expertise in the field is derived through experiencing life as an adoptee and as a foster-adoptive mother.
