Transparent Teacher Practices: Supporting Ongoing Development of Instructional Expertise
We view teaching as a truly complex set of skills; requiring ongoing practice to maintain fluency and adjust to the diverse needs of students. Inviting feedback based upon clear success criteria is the most efficient and effective way to maintain and improve the level of practice for any complex skill, including the development of instructional expertise. The only way professionals can give and receive actionable feedback about teaching is if the act of planning, delivering, and reflecting on instruction is seen and heard by others.
Implementing Transparent Teacher Practices can result in strong Collective Efficacy and individual ownership professional learning. The power of Collective Efficacy is in the multiplier effect—when some teachers engage in improvement efforts they will see successes within their classrooms, but when all teachers engage, the effect size is much greater. Education isn’t about what one individual does to improve; it’s how teams work together to improve. Successful teams recognize they are better together than any one of them is alone.
Participants will explore why, what, and how of five Transparent Teacher Practices: 1). Learning Walkthroughs, 2). Collaborative Coaching, 3). Collaborative Lesson Study, 4). Video Analysis, and 5). Peer Coaching.
- Participants will understand how to build collective efficacy through the teacher-driven professional learning
- Participants will become familiar with Transparent Teacher Practices: They why, what, and how of learning walk throughs, collaborative coaching, lesson study, video analysis, and peer coaching
- Participants will assess their organization's readiness to engage in Transparent Teacher Practices and develop a skelletal plan for next steps.

Hollie serves as the Secondary Director of Evidence Based Learning and Achievement in Canyons School District. Prior to joining Canyons, Hollie was an educational specialist for the Utah Personnel Development Center, where she co-directed Utah’s RtI training initiative that integrates academics, social behavior, and teacher coaching. Hollie is a certified teacher, school psychologist, and administrator with experience in elementary, middle and high school settings. Hollie also serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Utah.
