The War Room: How educational leaders can create a data-informed vision to maximize student achievement.
In order to maximize achievement and growth for all students, it is essential educational leaders create a highly defined vision and plan for their schools, identifying realistic goals based on data and assessment results and working backwards to determine timeline, tasks, and progress monitoring; it is a daunting organizational task. In the War Room at Treasure Mountain Junior High School (TMJH) in Park City School District, school leaders spend hours building their vision and plan for the coming school year. It is a process that narrows focus to specific areas of improvement with established results to monitor, contributing to more productive leadership and effective decision making as the school year and its accompanying noise and chaos move forward.
In addition to the War Room process, which is also a way for administrators and other educational leaders to model MTSS principles, like data-informed decisions, team-based problem solving, and progress monitoring, MTSS implementation is one of the specific goals the administrators at TMJH have defined. Session attendees will learn about the War Room and the MTSS implementation plan at TMJH as well as make the first steps in building their own War Rooms.
- School leaders will learn how to use data and assessment results to define school goals and make decisions to maximize student achievement and growth.
- School leaders will learn how to use the principles of backward design to create a five year plan for their schools.
- School leaders will learn how to divide tasks and monitor plan progress, which includes sharing their process with teachers as a model for MTSS, especially data-informed decisions and team-based problem solving.

Emily Sutherland is the Principal of Treasure Mountain Junior High School in Park City, Utah. Prior to going into administration, she taught English/Language Arts 7 at Ecker Hill Middle School, also in Park City, for nine years and Health Education and Reading in the United States Peace Corps in Georgetown, Guyana. Emily was a keynote speaker at this year’s Utah Middle Level Association conference, presenting on “When the Opioid Crisis Comes to Middle School: One school’s journey from crisis to connection.” Emily is passionate about MTSS and doing whatever it takes to support students.
