Finding Peace: A Qualitative Analysis of What Gay Members of the LDS Church Found Helpful

This study outlines what lesbian, bay and bisexual member of the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-day Saints identified as helpful in their journey with their sexuality and spirituality. Based on the survey responses of 198 individuals, five themes were identified using qualitative analysis: 1) Tools, including Therapy and Books, 2) SSA/Queer Connection and Acceptance, 3) Heterosexual Connection and Acceptance, 4) Finding Acceptance and Connection to God, and 5) Self-Acceptance. Each of the first four themes worked together to build up the last theme - greater self-acceptance. In engaging in these principles, participants found a greater sense of peace along with a reduced amount of shame. Because this was a convenience sample, this may not be generalizable to other sexual minorities within (or outside) the LDS Church. Given the recent Gallup poll (2021) finding that the number of young people who identify as LGBTQ is increasing, it is imperative that religious organizations find a way to connect with this population.
