Identification and rehabilitation of students with hearing impairment in Special Education schools in Fiji
An ear and hearing health identification, intervention and rehabilitation project was implemented by the Frank Hilton Organization with support from EARS Incorporated in April 2017 throughout the seventeen Special Education schools and one Vocational Training Centre, in Fiji, that come under the Special Education Department within the Ministry of Education. The aim of the project is to identify children, who have permanent hearing loss, or ear disease causing hearing loss, and provide appropriate treatment of ear conditions, hearing rehabilitation devices and ongoing services through continuing case management.
This presentation will describe the program design and methods used to provide assessments, treatments, and rehabilitation devices and services; the challenges and lessons learnt during the project; and the prevalence data for a variety of ear and hearing-related findings in this pediatric special needs population.
