The Journey to Universal Parent Support
ALL families should be provided the opportunity for connection with parent-to-parent support. It is important that there is a mechanism to provide access that is linguistically and culturally appropriate, timely (soon after diagnosis), provides a single point of entry that does not require parents to make cold calls or for busy medical professionals to remember to provide referrals. Arizona families are provided the opportunity to connect with parent support via a Data Sharing Agreement between Arizona Hands & Voices (AZHV) and Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). This presentation will discuss how the current collaboration came about, how we worked together to overcome barriers and the challenges. Heidi Klomhaus, as Executive Director of AZHV, Toni Vega, as Bilingual Parent Guide the current first contact person, and Cynthia Millard as the Follow up Coordinator at ADHS Office of Newborn Screening program will discuss their perspectives, the quality improvement efforts, current challenges, and the outcome data for this collaborative effort.
- Participants will identify potential collaborative opportunities in their own states.
- Participants will identify quality improvement strategies to maximize parent response rate and participation.
- Participants will gain the tools to provide a universal, equitable, and accessible path to parent-to-parent support in their state.

Heidi Klomhaus holds a Certificate in Deaf Studies, an AAS in Sign Language Interpretation and a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies-Public Administration. She serves as Executive Director and Guide By Your Side Coordinator of Arizona Hands & Voices. Being Hard of Hearing herself with severe hearing loss led her to attending college and pursuing studies in the Deaf world. During that time, her youngest child was born hard of hearing, giving Heidi a new direction in life. Knowing there were opportunities to make a difference in her own daughter’s journey led her to Arizona Hands & Voices where she is now making a difference in the lives of deaf or hard of hearing children and their families statewide.
