Land Cover Change and Habitat Monitoring of Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse
Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus, CSTG) populations have declined greatly in western North America. Formerly, CSTG occupied a range from central British Columbia to California and Colorado. Historically, the dominant habitats of CSTG consisted of bunch grasses and sagebrush steppe. Early settlement of CSTG home range resulted in overhunting in the mid to late 19th century and increased mechanization of farming practices in the early 20th. With an increase of cultivated areas and fragmentation of natural CSTG habitats, there are fewer CSTG populations consisting of multiple leks. Idaho supports approximately 60-65% of the remaining CSTG in the U.S, and is home to one of three populations that make up 95% of remaining breeding populations. Aerial and satellite imagery captured over the last 60 years facilitates the classification and quantification of the rate and amount of rangeland conversion to agricultural production throughout southeast Idaho. In combination with historical CSTG lek counts from Idaho Fish and Game, this study examines the relationship between changes in land cover to lek count numbers. This study identifies areas influenced by high levels of land cover change at a regional scale. Understanding the impact of land use conversion on CTSG is paramount to supporting management decisions and the application of future rehabilitation efforts. This innovative approach details the functionality of historical image classification for developing a greater understanding of CSTG habitat requirements and priorities for habitat restoration.
