Effect of gestational diabetes on newborns hearing: A systematic review
Introduction
The gestation period, the time from conception to birth is very crucial for every mother as well as for newborns. During pregnancy, the mother is at risk of many complications like diabetes, hypertension, and TORCH infection. Gestational diabetes puts both mother and newborns at risk of many adverse health conditions. Reduced hearing in newborns is one of them. Delayed speech-language development, poor academic skills, social skills, and low self-esteem are outcomes of hearing loss. Thus, it becomes important to understand the effect of gestational diabetes on hearing of newborns.
Aim: The aim of the study was to explore the effect of gestational diabetes on newborn’s hearing.
Method
A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and CHINAL. Keywords like ‘gestational diabetes’, ‘diabetic pregnancies’, ‘hearing loss’, ‘hearing impairment’, ‘hearing disorder’ with Boolean operators ‘AND’, ‘OR’ were used to form search string. Case studies, articles focusing on mother’s health were excluded. An excel spreadsheet was used to compile the total hits. After duplicate removal, title screening was performed. The abstract was screened by two independent authors. If there were any disagreements present, it was resolved through discussion. The full-length articles were shortlisted, extracted, and appraised.
Results
The four articles are included in the review. Findings suggests that hearing loss is more prevalent in neonates of mothers with gestational diabetes than non-gestational diabetic mothers. In addition, OAEs findings were ‘fail’ during the first hearing screening of newborns of mothers with gestational diabetes. The failure rate of first bilateral hearing screening was more for newborns of gestational diabetic pregnancies. Further, children of diabetic pregnancies were found to be at risk of bilateral hearing loss, particularly sensorineural in nature. Moreover, there is a need of detailed investigation how gestational diabetes affects the hearing ability of newborns.
