Effectively Engaging Parents in Quality Improvement Initiatives
Quality Improvement Methodology through the use of the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle has now become a standard for EHDI systems thinkers to enhance the system. This session will describe how parents can be effective partners in improving care for infants who are deaf/hard of hearing as states implement Quality Improvement methodology to test whether changes in the system are effective. The power of the story of families moving through the EHDI system as a means to identify areas of improvement will be explored. Strategies for including parents as effective partners in improving care for infants through quality improvement initiatives will be also be discussed. A sampling of actual PDSA’s which reflect the issues that concern families will be dissected. Necessary elements for effective team work in creating parent participation will also be explored.
- Sustain QI Improvements by engaging family partnerships.
- Outline the common factors that lead to successful parent-professional collaboration and best practices for achieving and sustaining family-centeredness in EHDI systems
- Build self-awareness that leads to a greater ability to partner with families in order for them to participate successfully in QI Improvement practices.

Stephanie Olson currently works as the Co-Director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infusion with Hands & Voices Headquarters and is the Family Consultant at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She previously worked for the Colorado Home Intervention Program as a family facilitator. During 2009, she was part of a team from Children’s Hospital Colorado that traveled to London, South Africa, Brazil and New Zealand and presented on best practices in supporting families. Stephanie has presented at the International Family-Centered Early Intervention (FCEI) Austria, in 2012, 2014,2016, and 2018. She participated in the U.S. and Russian cultural exchange in 2015 and 2016 with Hands & Voices to increase the understanding and impact of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in the parenting journey and professionals who work with those families.
