Hear the Song, Sing Along: Incorporating Singing Into Daily Routines

There is ample research that music is beneficial to a child’s brain development and more specifically a child’s auditory skills, speech production and language development (Estabrooks, W. & Birkenshaw-Fleming, L.1994). There is further research demonstrating the importance of providing services in the child’s natural environment, which build on a child’s skills in naturally occurring routines (McWilliam, R.2018). Join me as we review video clips of singing in daily routines and discuss and how singing can enhance a child’s listening and spoken language skills as well as parent participation. We will identify ways to expand the use of singing in your own home or therapy sessions to better serve more children and families with diverse backgrounds.

  • Participants will analyze the ways singing can positively impact listening and spoken language development
  • Participants will learn ways to engage caregivers in singing, including use of a checklist to aid in selection of listening and spoken language (LSL) targets
  • Participants will analyze how they can implement songs into their daily routines and or sessions
