Psychological Distress, Destructive Interparental Conflict, and Parenting Among Residential and Nonresidential Fathers
The goal of this work was to advance research on paternal parenting across different living arrangements. Guided by the Determinants of Parenting Process model (Belsky, 1984), we examined the exerted influence of fathers’ psychological distress on their parenting behaviors (nurturance, harsh discipline, and involvement) both directly and through destructive interparental conflict, indexed hostility and aggression during conflict. The data were drawn from a federally funded Responsible Fatherhood initiative programs consisting of community sample of residential and nonresidential fathers (N=1,792). Our findings revealed that regardless of fathers’ residential status, psychological distress was positively related to fathers’ reports of destructive interparental conflict. For residential fathers only, psychological distress contributed to less nurturing behaviors and lower levels of involvement. Destructive interparental conflict was a mechanism through which psychological distress influenced harsh parenting of residential fathers. These findings have implication for parenting intervention programs and suggest that to reduce harsh parenting, it is important to reduce interparental hostility, especially in residential families. Destructive interparental conflict may not be a particularly effective target for parenting interventions designed for nonresidential fathers.
