Transition to Adulthood
Transition to adulthood is a process all children go through as they move from their parent’s home to the next steps in their adult life. Whatever path taken, it is essential that young adults and their families prepare for and have a plan in place to guide them through this time in their lives.
What are the long-term goals for your young adult, and what do you envision for the future? Most parents focus on the present and have not given as much thought to the next steps. Having a vision for the future makes a person more likely to reach their goal. Some students have an IEP to guide them through this vision process but some do not.
This presentation will share some strategies that will help you prepare parents for the transitions that are going to happen. A timeline of skills, the variety of skills needed and how to go about sharing those skills with both parents and young adults will also be presented.
