A Behind the Scenes Look at Building a Deaf Mentor Program in Ohio
The benefits of connecting Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults with hearing families whose children are identified with hearing loss has been documented as being effective in helping families along their journey. Additionally, Deaf mentors provide the opportunity for families to learn sign language so they can be an ASL language role model for their child, while introducing the family to Deaf culture and sharing information about what it is like to grow up deaf in a predominately hearing world.
With the goal of incorporating Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adult-to-Family support services, Ohio embarked on a journey to launch the SKI-HI Deaf Mentor and Snapshots Program. To ensure program effectiveness, Ohio began to identify measurable outcomes to demonstrate language development, parent self-efficacy, cultural competency, and overall programmatic satisfaction.
Participants attending this session will be able to identify ways to develop, measure and gauge their Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adult-to-Family support service initiatives across various domains to enhance quality improvement efforts. Successes and failures along the way in addition to other unexpected delays will be shared as a lesson learned during the journey.
- 1. Participants will learn about the distinct roles Deaf Mentors and Snapshots providers play as an adjunct to Part C early intervention services.
- 2. Participants will learn key strategies and steps for developing a Deaf Mentor/Snapshots program and the importance of collaborative initiatives.
- 3. Participants will learn about challenges faced while implementing the Deaf Mentor/Snapshots program to help others avoid these potential barriers.

Sheryl M. Silver, Ph.D is a Public Health Audiologist and the diagnostic consultant for the State of Ohio Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program. Sheryl has over 20 years’ experience with statewide programs that focus on early detection, diagnosis and treatment of children with hearing loss. Before coming to the Ohio Department of Health, she worked as a hospital hearing screener, an audiologist for infants, toddlers and special needs populations, and an early interventionist for families of children with permanent hearing loss. Sheryl has presented on topics related to Ohio’s EHDI program both locally and nationally.

Samantha Taylor

Samantha (Sam) obtained her bachelor's at Ohio University in Communication Sciences and Disorders, where she developed a passion for infant and child hearing detection and intervention. Sam went on to obtain her Master's in Organization Leadership at Malone University. Prior to becoming the Supervisor of the Ohio Department of Health's Infant Hearing Program and Ohio's Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Coordinator, Sam served as the Director of Greenleaf Family Center's Community Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Sam is committed to ensuring families have the resources and tools to successfully navigate opportunities for their children and their future success.
