Protective Orders and Accessing Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake and the Utah Courts during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The presenters will provide an update of the changes to Utah laws regarding the types of civil and criminal protective orders including stalking injunctions. They will also explain how the Legal Aid Society and the Utah Courts are providing services during the pandemic.

  • Attendees will have a better understanding of civil protective orders.
  • Attendees will have a better understanding of how to access Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake's services and the Utah Courts' services during the COVID 19 pandemic.
  • Attendees will have a better understanding of criminal protective orders.

Presenters/Authors

Amy Hernandez (), The Utah Courts, amymh@utcourts.gov;
Amy Hernandez received her Master's degree in Public Health from Westminster College. She studied domestic violence and trauma as public health issues and examined prevention measures implemented in Utah. She also has her bachelor's degree in Justice Studies with a minor in Psychology. She works to address issues of domestic violence on a systemic level. Prior to working for the Administrative Office of the Utah Courts, she worked as the Director of Education and Prevention at a domestic violence community service provider.

Keri Gardner (), The Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, kgardner@lasslc.org;
Ms. Gardner graduated from University of Utah College of Law in 1993. She has practiced law at Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake for 19 years and has directed the Domestic Violence Victim Assistance program for the past 8 years. She is also experienced in criminal law, juvenile law, and family law.

Stewart Ralphs (), The Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake, sralphs@lasslc.org;
Mr. Ralphs received his JD from the University of Utah, College of Law in 1990 and joined Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake in 1991 where he has been a Domestic Relations attorney, director of the Domestic Violence Victim Assistance Program for two years and Executive Director since 1994. Mr. Ralphs is active in public policy and legislative issues.
