Engaging Professionals and Challenging/Under-Involved Families
Family Involvement is universally acknowledged as one of the primary components needed to achieve successful outcomes for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. This is true in the early years, as well as through the school age years (Sass-Lehrer et al. 2000). Increasing family engagement requires professionals to examine their counseling style, attitudes and expectations. A family's non-compliance with professional recommendations may be rooted in their emerging ability to utilize the complexity of the information related to their child's hearing. Families need freedom from anxiety and judgement and to feel safe and obtain hope. Professionals working with families in these critical and emotionally rich opportunities must be mindful of the family's journey. This session will examine strategies to help professionals and families manage their expectations of one another and increase the outcomes in the children they care for. Practical tips that lead to self-awareness and a greater understanding of the holistic nature of the journey of raising a child who is deaf/hard of hearing will be shared. This session will be presented by a parent and a deaf/hard of hearing adult that have had roles in the medical, early intervention and family support systems.

- Find common ground and cultural responsiveness strategies that engage families to services

Janet DesGeorges lives in Boulder, Colorado and is Executive Director of Hands & Voices Headquarters. Janet has presented to groups worldwide about the experiences of families as they journey through life with a child with deafness or hearing loss. Ms. DesGeorges received a program certificate from the MCH Public Health Leadership Institute in 2011 at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
As an EHDI Systems advocate, Janet believes in the principles and guiding philosophies of Hands & Voices towards a parent-driven, professionally-collaborative approach when supporting families in the early years. Her areas of interest include Leadership Development for parents who participate in systemic improvement; Deaf Education Reform and Improvement; Children’s Safety and Success(preventing child abuse and neglect); Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Systems; and Parent/Professional partnerships in Quality Improvement processes.

Stephanie Olson

Stephanie Olson currently works as the Co-Director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infusion with Hands & Voices Headquarters and is the Family Consultant at Children’s Hospital Colorado. She previously worked for the Colorado Home Intervention Program as a family facilitator. During 2009, she was part of a team from Children’s Hospital Colorado that traveled to London, South Africa, Brazil and New Zealand and presented on best practices in supporting families. Stephanie has presented at the International Family-Centered Early Intervention (FCEI) Austria, in 2012, 2014,2016, and 2018. She participated in the U.S. and Russian cultural exchange in 2015 and 2016 with Hands & Voices to increase the understanding and impact of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in the parenting journey and professionals who work with those families.
