Comparison of Grid and Battery Impacts of Extreme Fast Charging and In-motion Dynamic Charging
Extreme fast charging and in-motion dynamic charging are intended to meet the significant power and energy demands for larger electric vehicles, longer range trips, or more continuous operation (ride hailing, fleet and/or autonomous vehicles). This panel segment will compare the implications of the two solutions on the vehicle battery, utility infrastructure, and effective electricity rates.

Dr. Regan Zane is a USTAR Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Founder and Director of the Center for Sustainable Electrified Transportation (SELECT) and Power Electronics Lab at Utah State University. He leads a wide range of research programs in power electronics for electric vehicle drivetrains, conductive and wireless charging infrastructure, battery management systems, and dc and ac micro-grids. He has authored more than 150 peer reviewed publications and 20 patents and received numerous research, commercialization, and teaching awards. He was previously an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 2001 – 2012 and a Senior Research Scientist at the GE Global Research Center in New York from 1999 – 2001.
