Satisfaction an Insufficent Substitute for Quality: A Theoretical and Measurement Perspective
Relationship satisfaction is a common construct used to measure relationship quality. However, there are known issues with relationship satisfaction, including a lack of conceptual clarity. The strongly relational view of relationships provides a clear conceptual foundation on which to create a measure of relationship quality that captures a relational view. Using data from the US and Canada, we created and tested a new measure of relationship quality. In the first study, we tested the factor structure and item response of the underlying factors of strongly relational view of relationship quality. In the second study, we ran tests of measurement invariance to assess the generalizability of the measure across multiple samples. Findings indicated that a second order variable of relational relationship quality was supported, but that the measure did not support strong invariance. This suggests that individuals in relationships do indeed view aspects of their relationship in a way that supports the strongly relational view of relationship quality, but that the levels of responses may vary across populations.
