ACT Therapy Principles in DV Treatment
This presentation is intended to be a follow up to the 2018 presentation introducing using ACT therapy in values-guided goal setting. However, participants need not attend the first presentation to benefit from this new one. New research information on applying ACT therapy to offender treatment will be reviewed. This presentation will go more into depth on ACT therapy principles and give examples of application of those principles to DV groups. A DV Workbook will be available for sale at printing cost to participants who wish to purchase it.
- Participants will gain a basic understanding of ACT Therapy principles
- Participants will gain a method of using the basics of ACT Therapy to guide DV group discussions
- Participants will be provided with hand outs they can use to immediately implement ACT therapy principles with groups

Kathy Bruner has over 20 uears experience as an Occupational Therapist working with people with physical, cognitive, and psychosocial disabilities. She received a Master's degree in Teaching and Learning at the University of Utah and taught Occupational Therapy, focusing on theory, mental health, and group process skills. She worked at the Utah State Hospital for 11 years, culminating in obtaining a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. While at the hospital, she served on the treatment and research committee, inspiring her love for evidence-based practice and quality improvement. She worked with Gary Burlingame, PhD, on modifying the Group Psychotherapy Interaction Rating Scale for clinical practice, and taught group process to interdisciplinary groups at the hospital. She now operates a private agency specializing in domestic violence treatment for both offenders and survivors.
