Improving accessibility to AVT via Telehealth
Children who use hearing aids or cochlear implants benefit from auditory-verbal therapy to develop their listening and spoken language skills. The role of auditory-Verbal Therapy is to guide parents/family members to use listening strategies during everyday life situations. Due to life events families often encounter periods during which they are unable to bring their child to their weekly therapy appointment. The Barton G. Kids Hear Now Teletherapy program was created to support families throughout their journey and to allow continuity of services regardless of life hazards and patient location but also to serve local families that have elected this service. The Barton G. Kids Hear Now Center provides telehealth services in South Florida but also to patients abroad who do not have access to auditory-verbal therapy. This presentation will provide information on our teletherapy program, it will focus on intervention tips that have been useful as well as examples of families that have benefited from this model.
- Participants will learn about the Barton G. Telehealth program at the University of Miami Ear Institute.
- The participants will learn about 2 strategies that can be used during a telehealth session.
- Participants will learn 1 way mindfulness can be used in telehealth for the purpose of coaching parents/children.

Domitille is a trilingual Speech-Language Pathologist who has worked at The Barton G. Kids Hear Now Cochlear Implant Family Resource Center since 2011. Domitille received her Master’s degree in Communication Disorders from Florida International University in 2006 and her certificate of Clinical competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association in 2007. In 2014 she received her Listening and Spoken Language Specialist certification from the Alexander Graham Bell Association. Since April 2017 Domitille is also trained to teach the .b Mindfulness Curriculum to teenagers. At the University of Miami Ear Institute Barton G. Kids Hear Now Cochlear Implant Family Resource Center she assesses and monitors the communication skills of children 0 through 5 pre and post cochlear implantation. As part of the evaluation process she coaches and guides families to foster listening and spoken language development in their everyday interactions.
