Deaf Mentorship and Role Modeling Program: Experiences and Outcomes

Deaf and hard of hearing adult mentorship for families with deaf or hard of hearing children (DHH) children has frequently been cited as a highly requested resource as parents learn and navigate linguistic and cultural decisions. In response to this need, the Statewide Outreach Center at Texas School for the Deaf (SOC at TSD) has launched a statewide program, Texas Deaf/Hard of Hearing Mentor Program, supporting, assisting, and advising parents and other family members with DHH children, ages birth through 5. Through two models, home-based or remote web-based video conferencing, adult deaf mentors and deaf or hard of hearing role models provide a family-centered plan that is parent/child driven based on linguistic and cultural backgrounds and needs. Deaf and hard of hearing mentors and role models serve two different purposes within the program: 1). Mentors meet weekly with families teaching American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture, while introducing them to community knowledge and engagement; and, 2). Role models serve as a resource, family guide, and source of knowledge for families curious to learn about backgrounds, educational experiences, and communication preferences of deaf adults. This presentation will discuss experiences distinguishing between the two services and progress on meeting established goals, along with key strategies for developing a mentor/role model program. Also discussed is the importance of early intervention, either face-to-face or remotely, through connections between families and DHH children with Deaf adults in the community.

  • Recognize components of a strong Deaf Mentor & Role Model service
  • Contrast different responsibilities for mentors and role models
  • Begin development of a deaf mentor and role model program
